Information
tour to Helsinki, Finland, and Stockholm, Sweden, in May
2000
The Council of Torne Valley and Lapin Liito carried out
an information tour to Helsinki, Finland, and Stockholm,
Sweden, meeting the minister and department related to
the wild salmon issue in both countries. Participant from
our project was Östen Karlström. He presented to the Department
of Agricultural Affairs the present situation of the Baltic
salmon.
The information tour resulted in committees from both
Finland and Sweden visiting Torne Valley, in September
2000, to study the wild salmon situation on location.
Östen Karlström has written, in connection with the information
tour, the article "Torneälvslaxen, Bestånd, Hot och Framtid"
(in Swedish). The article can be found in this homepage.

Study
tour and information meeting in Sweden, the 16th and the
17th of September 2000
In connection with the conference in Haparanda, Sweden,
the 18th of September 2000, a study tour was arranged
for the Scottish and the Norwegian partners on the 16th
of September 2000 and an information meeting was held
on the 17th of September in Övertorneå, Sweden.
The aim was to study the situation of the wild salmon
in the north and to exchange and discuss knowledge and
experiences on location with representatives of different
interests in the salmon issue. The study tour was aimed
to give insight into the situation related to both wild
stocks (Torne River and Kalix River) as well as reared
stocks (Lule River).
In the study tour representatives from the Scottish partner
(also representatives of different salmon organizations)
as well as representatives from NASCO participated, nine
people altogether. Representatives from Norway also participated,
the lead partner and representatives of different organizations,
20 people altogether. Östen Karlström guided the group
during the study tour.
Reared
stocks
The participants in the study tour went to Lule River
to study establishments for salmon and sea trout breeding.
The tour went to Boden and Heden. The establishment in
Heden is the largest establishment of this kind in Sweden,
with an approximate annual production of 540 000 salmon
smolts and 60 000 sea trout smolts. Due to recent changes
in regulation (sea and coast) the situation for salmon
in the river is good.
The situation for sea trout is not as good though. The
tour also visited a local recreational fishing club, Börstingen
that informed the participants of their activities.
Wild
stocks
The study tour also went to Kalix River and Torne River.
The visit to Kalix River was to salmon reproduction areas
as well as recreational fishing areas. A salmon stair,
built in 1980, in Jokk fall was also visited.
The situation for salmon in Kalix River is good with an
increase, from 1996 and forward, of fish returning to
the river to spawn. The reason for this is more effective
regulation, regulating fishing in sea, coast and river
that was introduced in the year of 1996.
Meeting
on the 17th of September in Övertorneå, Sweden
Information to the participants. The Scottish and Norwegian
sub-projects informed about their activities. The Swedish-Finnish
sub-project informed about the present situation of the
salmon in Torne River, according to the article:
"Utveckling och skötsel av Torneälvens bestånd"
(in Swedish).
The article can be found in this homepage.
A study tour was carried out to the recreational fishing
area in Kattilakoski, where the participants were informed
about recreational fishing of salmon in the area. Also,
a meeting with the reference group in Kukkola was held.
